Bainbridge stores run out of hand sanitizer, related products

The outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Washington state has sparked a run on hand sanitizer, disinfectant pads, bottles of rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide and other cleansing/antiseptic products.

Bainbridge Island residents hoping to buy bottles of Purell hand sanitizer and related products were met with empty shelves Monday afternoon at island grocery stores and drugstores.

At the Rite Aid and the Safeway grocery store on High School Road Monday, small clusters of customers stared glumly at empty shelves and wondered where to look next. Also empty, shelves for bottles of rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, as well as travel-sized bottles of hand sanitizer.

One customer at Safeway said she’d found a similar sight at other stores on the island, and added that while bottles of hand sanitizer and packages of disinfectant pads were available online, the prices had been substantially increased in recent days.

A clerk at the Island Village Rite Aid said additional truck deliveries were expected Thursday, but there was no indication that any warehouses still had any sanitizer-type products left to send to stores.

Gov. Jay Inslee declared a “state of emergency” in Washington on Saturday after the first death in the state — and nationwide — was attributed to COVID-19.
