Bainbridge schools to launch COVID-19 poster campaign

Public schools on Bainbridge Island will launch a poster campaign next week to remind students and staff about how to stay healthy as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak continues.

Washington state health officials announced the fifth death to COVID-19 in the state Monday.

Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency in Washington state due to the outbreak on Saturday, following the death of the first person in the Evergreen State due to COVID-19.

All five deaths were reported in King County.

Also Monday, officials with Kingston High School announced the school would be closed March 2 so it could be disinfected after officials learned that a KHS student had been tested for novel coronavirus.

On Bainbridge, the poster campaign in public schools will focus on good hygiene practices.

Officials at Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary, in this week’s school newsletter, told parents that the school’s facilities and maintenance staff “continue to implement best practices for cleaning and sanitizing school buildings and buses. Our nursing staff will monitor illnesses at schools and consult with the department of health if they observe individuals with symptoms or circumstances that seem to match those related to COVID-19.”

The poster campaign centers on best practices for reducing exposure:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds — a good rule of thumb: singing “Happy Birthday” (two times) takes approximately 20 seconds.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

• Avoid contact with people who are sick.

• Stay home while sick and avoid close contact with others.

• Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash hands.

The Bainbridge Island School District is offering parents a tip sheet about how to talk to their children about infectious diseases.

The advice is age-appropriate and can be found at the district website at https://www.bisd303.org/.
