Bainbridge road projects back on track after strike ends

Work was scheduled to restart this week on several road improvement projects on Bainbridge Island following the end of a strike by construction workers of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302, Bainbridge officials said.

Granite Construction, which was awarded the Beachcrest Drive paving project, was expected to restart work on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Bainbridge officials also said that work was expected to begin Thursday, Sept. 13 on the Miller Road and Fletcher Bay Road shoulder improvement projects.

The contractor, Titan Earthwork, is planning to have crews doing survey work for the two projects through Friday, Sept. 14.

Drivers will see more activity on those projects beginning on Monday, Sept. 17 and should expect delays.

Workers for Local 302 — the union that represents engineers, mechanics and surveyors in the construction industry — went on strike in Western Washington on Aug. 21 over better wages, hours and working conditions. A tentative agreement was reached Friday, Sept. 7 and the strike was called off.
