The city of Bainbridge Island is expected to honor one of its most diverse communities Wednesday and proclaim Aug. 24 as Islander Mobile Home Park Day.

The Islander Mobile Home Park is tucked away in a small corner of Winslow, behind city hall, and is home to approximately 50 residents. It has stood there for more than 40 years and was incorporated into the city’s comprehensive plan and the Winslow Master Plan.

The city council will vote on the proclamation at its meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14.

The sentiment commemorates a milestone for the mobile home park that has recently closed on a 35-year loan with a fixed rate of 3.05 percent.

The park residents’ initial $4 million loan, taken out in 2004, was coming due in 2014. With the new finances in place — a year ahead of schedule — the park moves ahead with a sense of security.

The city also took part in the initial purchase and bought seven shares in the Islander Residents Association and helped the residents buy the land in 2004.
