Suspicious death

Police are investigating a suspicious death after human remains were discovered March 3 along Old Clifton Road.

Port Orchard Police Department officials report that Public Works employees found what they initially believed to be an animal carcass near the 1100 block of Old Clifton Road. Upon closer inspection, responding officers determined the remains were human.

The department’s General Investigations Unit has taken over the case, with assistance from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Anyone with information regarding the case is urged to contact Port Orchard police by calling 911 or emailing police@portorchardwa.gov.

Juvenile director

Shara L. Sauve was named March 3 to the position of director of Juvenile and Family Court Services.

Sauve succeeds Michael S. Merringer, who retired in January after serving in the role since 2011. Sauve has been the manager of Detention and Facilities in the Pierce County Juvenile Court.

Author talk

Best-selling author Susan Meissner will be at Eagle Harbor Book Co. March 20 at 6:30 p.m. as it celebrates Women’s History Month.

Her latest novel, A Map to Paradise, weaves a narrative rich with intrigue and emotional depth, featuring three women—a blacklisted Hollywood starlet, an Eastern European immigrant with forged papers, and a widow caring for her agoraphobic brother-in-law. Clean air input

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency is inviting community input to help inform the design and implementation of the Comprehensive Climate Action Plan.

The one for Kitsap County will be March 20 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Bremerton Government Center.

Funded by the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program, the plan will guide regional efforts to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

Festival volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the Kitsap Water Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 13 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton.

The annual festival hosts up to 1,000 third- and fourth-grade students from across the county. Students learn the importance of protecting water resources and practical ways to implement water quality measures at home. Volunteers help with games, activities, setup and breakdown. In return they get to work outside, have fun, and are provided with breakfast snacks, lunch and a festival t-shirt. To register as a volunteer, go to kpud.org/water-festival/volunteer/

PSE work

Puget Sound Energy will continue work on its electric infrastructure projects on Bainbridge Island and help customers shift and reduce their energy use.

Projects include: Continue permitting activities for the upgrades at Murden Cove Substation. Construction anticipated to begin in spring; Continue fieldwork, design and permitting activities for the new Murden Cove – Winslow 115 kV transmission line, upgrades at Winslow Substation and current distribution system projects; Begin acquiring rights for the Winslow Tap transmission rebuild in spring; continue design and permitting; Trim trees along power lines to prevent outages; Encourage customers on BI to participate in Flex Smart+ to help smooth out demand on the electric system and save money.

New OC course

Olympic College recently announced a new course, “Electrical Theory: Direct Current Basics,” in partnership with Kitsap Transit.

The 10-week program provides a foundational understanding of direct current electricity, a critical skill for those interested in pursuing careers in emerging fields like electric vehicle maintenance, an OC news release states.

The course will be held at the KT facility. Classes begin April 10 and run for 10 weeks with a tuition cost of $750.

KEDA grant

Kitsap Economic Development Alliance has been awarded an $80,000 grant from the Washington State Microenterprise Association to support small businesses and entrepreneurs in Kitsap County.

As one of 46 organizations selected statewide, KEDA will use the funding to expand the reach of the Matchstick Lab Micro Business Accelerator, ensuring local business owners have access to the resources they need to grow and succeed, a KEDA news release states.

BAC in need

Bainbridge Arts and Crafts has started a new Renaissance Circle for larger donations as it continues to struggle to keep going.

The nonprofit almost died months ago, but former leaders stepped up to keep it going. However, it still needs donations to stabilize its finances and hire an executive director to accomplish its mission to cultivate a community where art and artists thrives, a BAC news release says.

Fly fishing auction

The Bainbridge Island Fly Fishers are having an auction fundraiser March 22 at 2 p.m. at Grace Church, 8595 NE Day Road.

Attendees can view raffle baskets, silent and live auction items. Complimentary snacks and non-alcohol beverages will be provided. The live auction starts at 2:30 p.m. The auction will feature new and gently used fly fishing equipment, hand-tied flies, gadgets, collectibles, guided trips and more.

Water meeting

The Bainbridge Conservation Coalition’s Water Resource Committee will meet March 10 from 6-7 p.m. at the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center on 370 Brien Drive SE. Hydrogeologists will discuss BI aquifers and the Groundwater Management Plan.
