Bainbridge Island briefs

Coates wins

Coates Design of Bainbridge Island has won a gold medal MUSE Design Award for its reHOME Project.

The international honor came in the “Rebirth Project” category. It received additional awards in the “Low-Cost Housing” and “Sustainable Design” categories.

With this tiny homes project by Coates, they reuse and repurpose materials from existing buildings to provide affordable, energy-efficient housing for underprivileged populations, a Coates news release says.

Future residents learn construction skills to help in the project.

Business president Matthew Coates said all of the materials were headed for the landfill, showing recycling is better for the environment. He envisions the project to be replicated across the country. “This project shows that things can be done differently.”

Coates and 28 other local enterprises contributed to the reHome project at Morales Farm, donating materials, funds and labor.

Murder charge

A suspect has been charged with murder in an Easter morning shooting in Port Orchard.

Police were called to the 1700 block of Higgins Road, off Mile Hill Drive, around 10:30 a.m. April 9 after receiving reports of a possible shooting. A man with an apparent gunshot wound was found dead at the scene.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported that the 58-year-old suspect had been taken into custody and would be facing one charge of suspicion of second-degree murder. He has also been charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

Fentanyl arrest

Bremerton police have arrested a Belfair man who tried to hide fentanyl in various types of containers and mail them to an Arizona man via UPS.

The local man tried to hide pills in a Hydroxy Cut weight loss bottle and a package of Camel cigarettes, along with powder in a black and red Creatine container.

The man, 49, was in Kitsap County Superior Court April 3. He was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture or deliver. If convicted, he faces 10 years in prison and/or up to a $25,000 fine for each count. He is being held on $150,000 bail.

On March 6, a UPS manager in Bremerton called 911 after becoming suspicious of a package. They opened the package and found 250 fentanyl pills. UPS researched and found five other shipments between the two.

The local man actually complained to UPS about the suspect shipment not being delivered, saying he did not want to lose the Arizona man as a customer. The Belfair man had previously been investigated in a case involving heroin and meth.
