The cost of being able to pay with a credit card at city hall: priceless.

The city council will discuss the possibility of paying with debit or credit cards at city hall at its meeting tonight, beginning at 7 p.m. in the council chambers. The council will be in an executive session prior to the start of the public portion of the meeting.

The city’s finance department has been looking into the possibility of accepting plastic payments over the past month. Council members will get their first report on the issue from the finance department at tonight’s meeting.

But it won’t all be talk about credit cards at the meeting.

Bainbridge Island’s newest police officer will be sworn in at the meeting. “Police Chief for a Day,” student Sean Sweeney, will also take the oath.

Larry Dickerson, the police department’s new interim public safety director, will also be present to meet the council. Dickerson began working with the police department this week, taking over as supervisor while Chief Jon Fehlman is absent.

Public Works Director Lance Newkirk will return to the council to discuss the matter of the island-wide chip seal project for deteriorating city roads.

Last week the council tabled discussion on the chip seal project, and the contract award to Doolittle Construction, after Councilman David Ward expressed his disappointment over the information that had been presented on the road work.

The water plan update, and a discussion on the role of the Utility Advisory Committee, is also on the agenda.

The meeting will adjourn at 9:55 p.m.
