Bainbridge just got a little greener, with cash, flowing to good island causes.

The Bainbridge Community Foundation awarded 53 grants amounting to $137,000 to local island causes in June.

Demand was high: The foundation received more than

72 proposals this year for philanthropic causes. The average grant awarded was for approximately $2,500.

The community foundation has three awards provided for special causes. The Trustees’ Award was split by three organizations: The Bainbridge Island Graduate Institute, The Boys and Girls Club, and Island Time Activities.

The Lambert/Kuffle award, named for staff at the Bainbridge Community Foundation, went to Martha & Mary, Peninsula Community Health Center, and Washington State Smile Partners for their work with health, housing and human services.

Funded by her family, the Karin Davis Award for conflict resolution went to the Dispute Resolution Center of Kitsap County.

Another specialized grant was given to the Bainbridge Library to pay for an open/closed sign.

Other grants were awarded to various causes across eight themes including health, home, learning, access, support, expertise, preservation and celebrating Bainbridge.

The foundation was formed in 2001 to create a community endowment aimed at the betterment of island life. Over the years it has provided a total of $829,178 in grants to local organizations working to make Bainbridge Island a better place.
