Bainbridge blotter | Too close to the weed

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

SUNDAY, DEC. 29

2:39 a.m. An 18-year-old Bainbridge Island man was arrested for driving after consuming marijuana while under the legal age.

Police observed the man driving, in a black BMW sedan, excessively fast on Highway 305 near the intersection of Hidden Cove Road. He was stopped just north of the Highway 305-Day Road intersection.

Immediately, police said, the strong smell of marijuana was obvious upon contacting the driver. When asked if he’d been using, he said no. He spoke lethargically, police said, and had to be reminded to get out his insurance information.

The man did poorly during a field sobriety test and then told police he’d been around marijuana all night, which he said could explain why he smelled that way and possibly his performance on the test.

He was arrested and given the chance to call the car’s owner, his father, who, he said, was out of the country at the time. Police called the man’s father, who said he had nobody who could come and take possession of the car, but said he’d allow his son to make arrangements.

The driver called a friend, but got not answer so the car was impounded.

At the station, the driver allowed his blood to be voluntarily drawn for testing before he was transported to jail.

Bail was set at $2,500, as he had no prior arrests on his record.
