Bainbridge blotter | Signs of a political disagreement

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

MONDAY, NOV. 5

3:12 p.m. A Bainbridge man told police somebody had stolen numerous election signs he’d paid for and placed along island roads.

The signs, urging people to “Vote No on Proposition 1,” cost about $300, the man said. He’d placed the signs three days before, being careful, he said, not to block any “Vote Yes” signs but instead placing them next to those signs. Then, he was alerted online that somebody was removing his signs and, upon investigation, found many — “nearly every single sign” — were in fact missing.

He offered a $5,000 reward online for information leading to the identification and arrest of the thief, but recited no credible tip.

A report was filed.

6:31 p.m. The owner of Paper & Leaf called police to report two people behaving suspiciously outside the shop.

Two men, strangers to the employees, arrived at the shop at about 4:14 p.m. and remained in the parking lot until about 6:15 p.m. They asked the shop employees a lot of questions about how many security cameras were in use, if nearby businesses also had cameras and what time the shop closed, all the while acting strangely, as if they may be under the influence of stimulants: jerky, twitchy and manic.

Employees had to repeatedly tell the man they could not ingest or smoke marijuana, or regular cigarettes, near the building.

The men claimed they were having car trouble, though neither made any effort to fix whatever was wrong with it, but instead began cleaning out the car, retrieving, among other things, a pair of “uncuttable butcher’s gloves.”

Finally, the men left, and the owner called police, who promised to increase patrols near the shop throughout the night.
