Bainbridge blotter | Mystery man picks the wrong boat

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

MONDAY, JUNE 3

1:10 p.m. A 27-year-old transient from Bremerton was arrested onboard a Washington state ferry at the Winslow dock after he refused to get off the boat.

Ferry workers, including the captain, had repeatedly asked the man to go ashore and he would not. Police found the man sitting on a bench near a window. He had no shirt on. Asked his name, the man said he was “Unknown Person.” Asked if he had any identification, the man said yes but refused to show it.

The man told police he wanted to go to Bremerton and would not get off the boat until it got there. Police told him he was on Bainbridge, that the ferry was about to go back to Seattle and it did not go to Bremerton. Also, police said, the captain would not allow the man to ride back to Seattle on his vessel as the rider been a problem for the crew on the Seattle side and during the sailing to the island.

The man was again asked to get off the boat, which he refused to do. A struggle ensued when police attempted to arrest him, though he was soon taken into custody. One officer suffered a cut on his elbow, which was bleeding slightly, during the altercation.

The man again said he did not want to get off the boat if it was not in Bremerton and did not understand why police would not simply let him go. He was transported to the Kitsap County Jail and the Bainbridge Island Fire Department was summoned to look at the officer’s injury.
