Bainbridge blotter | Incoherent and addicted

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

SUNDAY, DEC. 30

2:41 a.m. Police inside the downtown Winslow station overheard and responded to a car collision on Olympic Drive. They went outside to find a green Subaru Outback on the sidewalk near the Winslow Way intersection.

The car was being reversed as the driver, 39,of Poulsbo, was apparently trying to leave the scene.

An officer got into a police car and turned on the flashing lights, and the vehicle continued in reverse until the driver was ordered to stop and take the keys out of the ignition.

The driver was incoherent but his speech was not slurred and he did not smell of alcoholic beverages. He said he had not been drinking.

The man seemed to have poor control over his body, police said, and was obviously impaired.

Explaining he was a recovering heroin addict, the man said he had recently been taking methadone. He was found to have a non-extraditable warrant for previous drug charges. He consented to a breathalyzer test, blew a .000, but appeared constantly on the verge of falling asleep. He was taken to the police station and tested for drug usage. He admitted to taking other narcotic medications besides methadone, including gabapentin. The man had numerous recent injection marks on his arms and told police he was still using heroin.

Asked how recently he had last injected himself, the man said, “Pretty recently.”

He would not, however, consent to a blood test and an on-duty prosecutor could not be reached for a telephonic search warrant. Police thus arrested the man for driving under the influence of narcotics and he was transported to Harrison Medical Center-Bremerton.
