Bainbridge blotter | DUI motorcycle rider

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

THURSDAY, JULY 4

1:49 a.m. A 40-year-old Bainbridge Island man was arrested for driving under the influence after being hurt in a motorcycle crash near Ferncliff Avenue and Green Spot Lane.

Police responded to a call about a single motorcycle spill and an unconscious driver on the road. Upon arrival, they found the Bainbridge Island Fire Department treating the man and detected the strong smell of alcoholic beverages about him.

Police ascertained from the scene that the man was riding north on Ferncliff and was unable to make the sharp turn at the Green Spot intersection. There were marks on the pavement that appeared to match damaged parts of his bike. His helmet was found to have fresh scratches, along with dirt and grass stuck in the visor.

In the ambulance, the driver refused to answer any questions or perform a field sobriety test. While he was transported to the hospital, police obtained a search warrant for blood samples.

At the hospital the man was placed under arrest. He asked to speak to a public defender and was allowed to do so in the emergency room using a police officer’s work phone.

Blood samples were drawn and the man was taken to jail without incident. Bail was set at $5,000.
