Bainbridge blotter | Driverless truck runs over mechanic

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

SATURDAY, JULY 22

7:11 p.m. Police were alerted to a suspicious and apparently abandoned piece of luggage at the corner of Baker Hill Road and Sorrel Way. It was a purple suitcase “thrown into the bushes” on the northwest side of the corner.

Upon inspection, the suitcase was found to be empty and without owner information attached.

The suitcase was taken to the police station as found property.

7:36 p.m. Police were called to the scene of a workplace accident at an island auto mechanic shop.

The garage owner was outside working on a personal vehicle, on his own time, when the truck rolled forward and the front wheels came off the lift, crushing his arm. The man apparently suffered a severe broken arm and was attended to by paramedics.

Police made an incident report, though no crime had been committed and and they decided it was not technically a workplace injury, as the man was the owner and not been on the clock at the time of the mishap.
