Answers lacking in case of dead man found on Bainbridge last year

Bainbridge police are still waiting for answers on what left a man dead in a wooded area next to Highway 305 south of High School Road last October.

Officers were called after a person who was collecting willow branches in the woods on the west side of the highway found a backpack, and then the body of a deceased man.

Police have not indicated the death was the result of foul play, and authorities have been waiting for the Kitsap County coroner to provide additional information on the man’s death before closing the case.

Bainbridge Island Police Chief Jeff Horn said this week that there was still no word from the coroner’s office that would shed additional light on the man’s death.

The county coroner is responsible for determining the manner and cause of death, he said.

Horn said he doesn’t expect an update soon.

Bainbridge police asked for an update from the coroner’s office this week, with no new results.

“They said they have a backlog and it’s taking around eight months,” Horn said.

Authorities earlier identified the deceased, and officials said his next of kin had been notified of his death.
