Agate Pass Bridge painting project ramps up after winter break

The extensive work to repaint the State Route 305 Agate Pass Bridge will continue after its winter pause, officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation said.

Crews could restart work as soon as Monday, March 9, officials said.

Both lanes of the bridge will stay open during most of the work. During the evening, travelers can expect one-way alternating traffic.

The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph during daytime work, officials said, and one sidewalk will remain open.

There also will be temporary commercial vehicle restrictions for oversize/overweight vehicles.

Workers have so far repainted about 25 percent of the key span between Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Peninsula.

After the winter break, they will restart work on the Bainbridge Island side.

The project, which helps preserve the bridge, is anticipated to be complete in fall 2020.

The repainting of the entire bridge — its first since 1991 — will take two years to complete and is expected to cost $16 million.
