Whether you’re decorating a new space or refreshing your current one, hanging artwork correctly can dramatically improve the look and feel of a room.
But that doesn’t mean it’s a simple job.
For a little insight from the local experts, we checked in with Brandon Keller, with Bainbridge Island’s Toolbox Dispatch, a trusted name in home maintenance. His team offers expert mounting services and more to keep your home polished, secure and functional.
Step 1: Measure
The first step is finding the right spot. Start by measuring the center point of the wall or the furniture you’re aligning your art with, like a bed or couch. Lightly mark this spot with a pencil. Then, decide how high you want to place your art. A good rule of thumb is to position the center of the piece at 57 to 60 inches from the floor – this aligns with average eye level for most viewers.
Step 2: Mark
With your center height marked, it’s time to calculate where the hook should go. Here’s the correct formula to follow:
Goal: Calculate and mark the exact height to place your hook/nail.
- Measure your artwork height (A): Note the full height including the frame.
- Find the center of the art (B): Divide the artwork height by 2.
- Measure wire slack (C): Pull the hanging wire taut toward the top center of the frame. Measure from the top of the frame down to the peak of the pulled wire.
- Calculate hook position:
- Desired Center Height + ( B – C ) = Hook height on wall
- Example:
- Desired center height = 58”
- (A) Artwork height = 24” → B = 12”
- Wire slack = 2” → C = 2”
- Formula: 58 + (12 – 2) = 68”
So, place your hook at 68 inches from the floor.
Step 3: Hammer
Insert your hook or nail at the calculated height, angling it slightly upward. For heavier artwork, use wall anchors or two hooks spaced evenly from the center to distribute the weight securely.
Step 4: Hang
Hang your piece, check for level and make final adjustments. Voilà – your space just got a style upgrade.
What about the old holes?
Before rehanging, you might notice small holes from previous art. Patching them is simple and gives your wall a cleaner, refreshed look. Here’s how to do it:
- Clean the area: Use a damp cloth to wipe dust or debris from the hole.
- Fill it: Use a lightweight spackle or wall patch compound and a putty knife to fill the hole. Press firmly and smooth it out so it’s flush with the wall.
- Let it dry: Follow drying time instructions—usually a few hours.
- Sand lightly: Use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the patched area once dry.
- Touch up with paint: Dab on a little wall paint that matches your existing color. If you don’t have leftover paint, many hardware stores can color-match from a paint chip or wall sample.
Tip: For larger holes (from anchors or screws), you may need to use a wall repair patch or back the hole with mesh tape before applying compound.
