The popular ferry farm stand has returned for it’s second year, providing fresh local produce to Kitsap commuters.

Each Wednesday, the stand will offer pre-bundled bags of fruit and vegetables for $5.

Last year the stand served thousands of commuters and saw more than $10,000 in sales, all of which went directly back to local farms on Bainbridge and Kitsap County.

The stand is organized and staffed by volunteers from Sound Food, a group founded in 2007, as a project of Sustainable Bainbridge.

“We wanted to find a way to make it easy for people to buy local food – especially those who can’t make it to the Farmers’ Market on Saturday,” said Sound Food founder Sallie Maron. “What better place than right where they get off the boat on their way home to dinner?”

The stand is located near the yellow information booth between the terminal and the Kitsap Transit buses.

Produce for the stand’s opening last week was supplied by Butler Green Farms and Laughing Crow Farm.

Salad mix, carrots, snap peas, garlic and garlic scapes were all available and berries are beginning to spring up as well.

The Ferry Farm Stand will be open each Wednesday throughout the harvest season from 4:15-6:15 p.m.
