Ground broken on Bainbridge Island Japanese American Memorial Wall | Slideshow

Clarence Moriwaki, president of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Memorial, leads Fumiko Hayashida to the excavator to dig the first hole for a new memorial wall at a Monday ground-breaking ceremony.

The 276-foot-long wall will roughly mark the route taken by Bainbridge Japanese Americans to the Eagledale ferry dock 67 years ago, as they departed the island for internment camps. Along the wall an interpretive timeline will tell the story of the islanders during WWII.
