David Lasky, the colorist behind award-winning graphic novels “El Deafo” and “The Carter Family,” will teach teens ages 12 to 18 simple cartooning skills to help express character, movement and space.

“Participants need only to be able to draw a few simple shapes and I’ll guide them from there,” Lasky said.

The Seattle-based cartoonist will also cover booklet-making and the grammar of comics. Participants will then put these lessons to the test by making their own mini-comics.

“Comics are more about communicating an idea, rather then being a master writer or artist,” Lasky said. “I’d like to unlock everyone’s imaginations a bit, and give them a sense that they are full of stories that are waiting to come out.”
