BSO Young Artist Concerto Competition deadline looms

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra has announced that the 2018 Young Artist Concerto Competition will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6 at Bainbridge Performing Arts.

The competition is open to all instruments (instrumental and vocal) for young musicians, ages 12-21.

The competition application deadline is Monday, Nov. 20, and interested parties are invited to download the application, and review complete contest information, at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org/products/bso-competition.

This event is not open to the public and is for competitors only.

The winner of the 2017 Young Artist Concerto Competition will have the opportunity to perform with the BSO on April 14 and 15, 2018.

All instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, harp and vocalists are welcome to audition. Applicants should be between the ages of 12 and 21 years old as of the competition date, and need not be residents of Bainbridge Island.

Music requirements:

Works should be between 5 and 20 minutes in length. Acceptable works include a movement from a multi-movement concerto or single movement solo works that meet the time requirements. Duos and trios are not permitted. Audition officials have the final say on what works are permissible for competition.

All applicants must have their works pre-approved for competition. This step is required to ensure feasibility by the BSO in regards to personnel, music procurement and preparation. Also, music must be memorized. Accompaniment is required, and there is an audition time limit of 10 minutes.

Cuts are permissible and will have no negative impact on the judge’s evaluation.
