BHS musicians earn honors

The Bainbridge High School Band was well represented at the Olympic Music Educators Association’s Solo &Ensemble competition on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Central Kitsap High.

The competition is the qualifier for the state competition, and Spartan musicians Sarah Jung (violin), Megan Rideout-Redeker (clarinet), Kevin McCann (alto saxophone) and Henry Brown (tenor saxophone) won their respective instrumental divisions.

In addition, the duet ensemble of Henry Brown (alto saxophone) and Kevin McCann (soprano saxophone), accompanied by Jack Friedman on piano, placed first among the small woodwind ensembles. These four soloists and small ensemble qualified to compete in the state Solo &Ensemble Competition at Central Washington University April 28-89.

Henry Brown (alto saxophone) and Kevin McCann (tenor saxophone) are also first alternates. The BHS Percussion Ensemble placed as second alternate in the large percussion ensemble division.

The previous weekend, Sarah Jung (violin, All-Northwest Orchestra) and Kevin McCann and Henry Brown (alto saxophone, All-Northwest Concert Band) represented Bainbridge High at the National Association for Music Educators All-Northwest Conference, where they performed at Benaroya Hall for an audience of approximately 2,500.

All are invited to attend an Honors Recital at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at the Masonic Lodge to hear these high school musicians and a special performance by BHS Band Director Chris Thomas and his brass quintet. More information is available at www.bainbridge bands.org.
