4 BHS students win cash for artwork

Four Bainbridge High School students will receive cash prizes for their artwork.

The grand prize winner is senior Calder Lange for his creative photography. One of his images that caught the judges’ attention was a striking combination of photos stacked over each other to create a single image. Calder said, “The photo with the star trails is over 140 long exposure images from about an hour and a half of shooting…in order to create the moving effect of the stars and the planes flying through the sky.”

The awards are given by the Bainbridge Island Studio Tour as part of its annual Youth Art Award. This was the 9th year for the award, which is funded by last year’s Studio Tour artists who (optionally) donate a portion of their sales. Dinah Satterwhite, tour manager, said each student is required to submit five photos of their work.

Three honorable mentions also will be awarded: Josephine Joslyn, a senior, for her digital art and complex pen-and-ink drawings with unique messages; MinWoo Cho, a senior, for her imaginative pencil and micron pen drawings; and Eleanor Ford, a senior, for her acrylic and mixed media work.

Ford said, “I wanted to portray scenes in which decay was not bad or an ending, but instead a driving force of transformation.”

Cash and merit certificates will be awarded at BHS May 18 at 6 p.m. during the Spring Arts Festival. A large display of art from a variety of mediums will be on display, and other awards presented as well.

The Tour will continue with the Youth Art Award and is preparing for the upcoming Summer Studio Tour Aug. 11-13. Details: www.bistudiotour.com. For more, call Satterwhite at 206-842-0504.
