Senior center looks at sharing space with BIR | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

As director of the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, I occasionally hear what’s on people’s minds. Recently, I heard something I’d like to clarify.

The senior community center is in talks with Bainbridge Island Rowing, our neighboring organization on Waterfront Park. BIR is constructing a boathouse adjacent from the center that will include a large multipurpose room. Given our growth, we are discussing terms to rent that space to support our expanding programs, which benefit seniors (many of whom live on limited and fixed incomes).

Gaining access to the boathouse at a reasonable rate — particularly during midday hours when it might otherwise be vacant — could be a good deal for everyone. BIR has said that part of their vision for the boathouse and adjacent spaces is to provide space for community activities; our interest is to help realize that goal to the benefit of the wider community.

The two boards are in discussions to ensure that any agreement we come to is beneficial to both parties — and to the citizens of Bainbridge Island and adjacent communities.
