Send Tirman to the city council | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

Bainbridge Island voters have the opportunity to select a progressive candidate to represent them on the Island’s city council. We have a candidate, Matt Tirman, who will keep his campaign promises and represent the best interests of residents.

Matt shares our concerns over our growing population, affordable housing and the lack of innovative city council thinking with issues that affect our lives. I have met with Matt, listened to his take on what is happening on Bainbridge and most importantly, Matt listened to me.

Recent actions by our council indicate there is a need for change. Matt is very clear in his opposition to Island Power’s plan to establish a municipal electric utility. He is opposed to the council’s decision to proceed with the pedestrian bridge as well as the latest cost estimate for the new police facility.

This opposition is not indicative of a conservative bent but rather his opposition to wasteful spending and the council’s inability to prioritize expenditures. Recognizing his progressive agenda, Kitsap Democrats and two of the biggest unions in the state have approved and endorsed his candidacy.

Matt clearly sees that as Bainbridge continues to grow the problems and issues we face must be dealt with aggressively and with innovation. Transportation issues must allow and promote better public transportation options and reduce resident isolation. The housing crisis must be solved by code revisions for tiny houses, more use of ADUs and inclusionary zoning in the Winslow core.

If elected Matt has promised to be open and transparent by publicizing his council votes and holding weekly office hours.

Matt Tirman is the candidate who will return common sense decision-making to the council while listening to and respecting the concerns of Bainbridge Islanders.

Vote for Matt Tirman for city council this November.
