Memorial Day is a time for gratitude | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

I appreciate the cartoon commemorating our comrades who fell in battle on this Memorial Day weekend. However, I was disappointed that the May 24 Review did not dedicate any other space to the importance of this holiday to our national consciousness; not even publicizing the American Legion Monday morning service at the high school memorial.

This is not merely a three-day weekend. It is a time for prayerful gratitude to the soldiers, sailors, air corps and nurses, both men and women, who have protected this country in numerous wars over centuries.

As a young naval officer, I served in the Vietnam waters in 1968-1969. I also lost a very dear army friend and have two other friends who survived but still bear the wounds of fighting in the jungles of Vietnam.

May we always remember.
