Support schools
To the editor:
I am the parent of two children in the El Velero Spanish immersion program at Ordway Elementary. Like many of you, I’m troubled by the recent news of budget shortfalls. We live in an affluent area and care deeply about our schools—so why is our district running out of money?
We’ve all seen the news about our district’s accounting errors. But the bigger issue is that our state is underfunding schools. Across Washington, five districts are running deficits, and 14 more are on the brink. Since 2020, our state has underfunded Bainbridge Island schools by $20.5 million, even as inflation has driven up costs. And our state’s “levy lid” limits what we can raise via levies.
What can we do? It’s time to step up and support our schools. Please take a moment to call state Reps. Tarra Simmons and Greg Nance, and state Sen. Drew Hansen at 1-800-562.6000 or email app.leg.wa.gov/memberemail/ to ask for an increase in public school funding.
And, if you’re able, please join me in making a donation to the Bainbridge Schools Foundation. BSF helps to fill the funding gap by supporting critical areas such as academic intervention, educator support and social-emotional learning programs. Our district relies on BSF’s pledge when creating its budget, so that support is critical.
Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. By investing in our schools, we invest in the future of our community.

Bainbridge Island
Fundraiser support
To the editor:
On behalf of the Bainbridge Island Swim Club, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the generosity shown during our recent fundraiser at Town & Country last month. Your contributions and enthusiastic support reminded us of the incredible spirit that makes Bainbridge Island such a special place. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to meet our big goal of raising $25,000 for our program!
Many donations were from islanders who grew up training at some point with BISC, and it was exciting for our young swimmers to hear how much of a lifelong impact this program has had on the lives of others and this community.
The funds raised will go a long way in supporting our team, especially as we navigate upcoming pool renovations this spring. Your generosity ensures that our swimmers can continue to train, grow, and represent our community with pride.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by, donated, and shared words of encouragement. We are deeply grateful to be part of such a supportive community and look forward to many successful seasons ahead.
