It’s time we take back our Bainbridge council | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

Voters! Did you know that three of the candidates for city council tolerated a climate of harassment, intimidation and disrespect that cost the city of Bainbridge Island a perfectly good (no, a very good) city manager and police chief?

Mayor Kol Medina, Councilmember Leslie Schneider and Councilmember Sarah Blossom allowed other councilmembers to bully city staff, not to mention members of the public at council meetings and on the internet. Bullying is not OK in schools, it’s not OK on the playground and it’s not OK in the council chambers.

These same three also have presided over a six-month land use moratorium that has been extended four times. Of course, the city’s $20 million police and court building is exempted.

When the city extended the shoreline moratorium multiple times, an expensive lawsuit awarded damages to affected property owners and penalized the city. Do they not remember this?

And what about the illegal development on-going on one councilmember’s property (she is not running for election this time). Is this lack of oversight, or do the current councilmembers not understand the need for equal treatment under the law for all?

Our councilmembers work for us, the voters. Bullying, contempt, and preferential treatment should stop with this election.

It’s time to take back our city council. Vote for candidates who will bring new ideas and a new perspective to city government. Vote for Grayson Wildsmith and Kevin Fetterly.
