Hytopoulos can hit the ground running | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

I am writing to recommend Kirsten Hytopoulos for the city’s at-large council position.

As an attorney practicing in the area of land use, I am familiar with the complicated regulations that control how growth happens on this island. I have been impressed by Kirsten’s deep knowledge of this area of the law. Understanding the regulations controlling land use are a vital part of the job as a council member. It does not lend itself to on-the-job training.

Kirsten can draw upon her prior experience on the council and her legal training to tackle the issues facing our community. For one, the hiring of the next city manager, a position that will shape the future of our island. Kirsten has already worked through hiring two city managers when she served on the council 2009-2013. Her background will be invaluable.

Also on the Suzuki land deal, she has studied this carefully and knows there are no easy answers. She understands the danger of setting a precedent of putting extraordinary density beyond the core growth area is a slippery slope that could undermine future efforts to contain growth on our island. And safeguarding our water resources is one of her top priorities. With her experience, deep roots in the community, and legal training, she is the best choice in November. She can hit the ground running and start working for us day one.
