PHC Construction of Bainbridge Island has broken ground on a new office building in Kingston.

The building is being raised at 11175 NE East Second St. and house the offices of Western Experts, a national transportation insurance wholesaler.

PHC officials said the structure will be built to “LEED Gold standards” as set by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The project will include many “green” building features such as rain gardens for surface water run-off and Washington-made solar modules from Itek Energy. Excess energy generated by the solar system will feed power back into the Puget Sound Energy grid.

PHC is working directly with PSE to reach maximum sustainability for the project, officials said. By using less energy and water, LEED certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for workers.
