Dr. Fred Grimm and Jim Coon, president of the board of Friends of Little Manzanita Bay, stand beneath a sign they put up to protest a proposal submitted by two neighbors who want to replace an 84-foot wooden dock with a 240-foot steel pier, ramp and dock including two boat lifts. Grimm, who has lived on the point with his wife, Willie since the 1970s, decided to display their protest by hanging the 25-foot-long banner in front of their house with the words, “SAVE THE BAY! STOP THE DOCK!” Little Manzanita Bay is designated Critical Habitat, under the Endangered Species Act, for Puget Sound Chinook salmon, Puget Sound Rockfish, and Southern Resident Killer Whale. The Bay is also considered Essential Fish Habitat for Coho, Chinook, and Puget Sound pink salmon.Nancy Treder/Bainbridge Island Review
