EPA collects samples at North Shoal site

Contractors with the Environmental Protection Agency will be photographing and sampling beach sediment on the North Shoal East Beach in June and July, the agency announced.

The sampling will help locate and determine the size of pools of creosote under the beach sediment, and is part of the ongoing study of the Wyckoff/Eagle Harbor Superfund site.

The samples will be collected using a coring drill; a small, machine-operated device that is not expected to be loud enough to disturb people west of Wyckoff Point. The work will be done during low tide, morning to mid-afternoon, for about four hours a day.

The first sampling was expected to wrap up this week. Contractors will return to the site from June 30 through

July 6.
