On Monday, April 12th 2021, a glorious sunshine day, Rosemary Driscoll Goodhue passed away surrounded in love by her family and close friends. As Rose came to us as the light, so she returned, having illuminated every moment she lived. As the sun sets over the Olympic Mountains each day, we know she joins us in collective awe, and always will. Rose is survived by her sons Clayton William Goodhue and John Joseph Goodhue, her brothers Harry and Wally Driscoll, and her recently born grandson, Hayden Thomas Goodhue.

Rose Driscoll Goodhue was born May 11, 1955 in Moscow, Idaho. She was the only girl alongside three older brothers, and her birth provided great joy to her mother Mary. Roses’ family moved from Moscow to Phoenix in 1958. Rose attended Madison Elementary School and graduated from Camelback High School. Rose would go on to complete advanced studies in occupational therapy at USC.

Rose met her husband, her “Rock,” and the love of her life, Chip Goodhue, in Playa Del Rey, California. As she would say, he was her moon and her stars, as she was his. They were wed on a lovely warm winter day in Phoenix in 1988. What followed was a 33 year commitment to building a family and becoming part of the community of Bainbridge Island, WA.

Serving others in her work and in her community was how she operated. Rose dedicated her time to helping students with special needs on Bainbridge Island for over 20 years, and never tired of the joy “her kids” brought her. Few things gave her greater peace than guiding and nurturing these children.

Rose loved activity and was most competitive. Getting up, out, and moving was one of her meditative mantras. She loved exercise, soccer, jogging, biking, swimming or walking virtually every day of her adult life. She was a city girl who also developed a deep love and respect of nature, and often hiked the local mountains or took her “girls” for a boat ride on the Sound. Rose was also an avid tennis enthusiast, and found a wonderful sense of community and friends on the courts. She continued to play competitively until several weeks before her death.

In the last year of her life while battling cancer, Rose relocated to Hansville, WA where she and Chip found peace and healing amidst the cool cedar forests and Olympic Mountain sunsets. Rose was sensitive, kind, thoughtful, and always filled with gratitude. She will be sorely missed by those fortunate to have known and loved her.

Rose’s family extends thanks to her friends Jackie, Wendy, Laura, Nancy M. and Dawn, who rarely missed a day in supporting Rose during her very difficult last months. And to Dr. Steve “the Silver Fox” Fling, who tirelessly helped guide us through her treatment program…we are forever grateful Steve, and know she had more time thanks to you. Finally, a special thanks to Pastor Pierre Allegre for his comforting prayers, words, and tears in Rose’s final hour.

A celebration of Rose is being planned for the summer of 2021. In lieu of flowers, Rose’s family encourages folks to contribute to the ROSEMARY GOODHUE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND, established to assist special needs students at Bainbridge High School.
