Hyla Middle School to screen documentary film

Published 10:43 am Saturday, May 12, 2012

Hyla Middle School and the Just Know Coalition will present a free screening of the film “Miss Representation” for parents and students 11 and older at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 at the school.

The documentary explores how the media’s misrepresentations of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. The film challenges limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, making it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel empowered.

Break-out discussion sessions will be held following the documentary.

Organizers of the screening said anyone under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult, and the film contains some strong language describing women and photos clips presenting women in sexual situations that are used to drive home the movie’s message. The documentary has been rated TV 14 DL.
