Bainbridge Island firefighters extinguished a fire that started in the bathroom of a home on Marshall Road near Vincent Road Monday evening.
Bainbridge Island Fire Marshal Luke Carpenter, who is also an assistant chief with the Bainbridge fire department, said the fire in the one-story home may have been caused by a space heater.
“It appears to have started in the bathroom and spread to other parts of the house,” Carpenter said.
One person and her pets were home at the time of the fire. No one was hurt.
Engines from the Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo and North Kitsap fire departments responded to the fire.
Carpenter said firefighters had the fire knocked down just before 7 p.m. Monday.
Damage appeared to be limited to the back wall of the bathroom, which collapsed, but smoke damage may be significant, Carpenter said.
Carpenter described the smoke damage as “pretty heavy.”
Firefighters will remain on the scene into Monday night, he added.
It was the second house fire in as many days for the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.
Units were also called Sunday to a house fire in Port Madison.
That home was destroyed by a blaze that is still under investigation.
