Allan Burns McCoskrie, of Bainbridge Island, died peacefully in his sleep on July 31 at Messenger House Care Center, after suffering from dementia. He was 69.

He was born in Seattle to Burns and Esther McCoskrie, who shortly afterward moved to Bainbridge Island, where he grew up. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1958.

He spent four years in the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Laws out of San Francisco.

Upon returning home, he worked at Bainbridge Floor Coverings, the business his father founded in 1955. In later years he worked as an electrician for Todd Shipyard in Seattle and also in shipyards in Oakland, Calif.

Allan touched the lives of many individuals and friends through his years as a mentor with Alcoholics Anonymous. He was sober for 28 years and was a source of inspiration to many.

He is survived by his son, Richard Allan McCoskrie of Poulsbo; sister Gloria Kirkpatrick of Arlington, Texas; sister Marie Justice of Bellevue, Wash.; and granddaughter Tricia McCoskrie.

His family wishes to express their appreciation for the loving care he received at Messenger House.

Arrangements and cremation are by Cook Family Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 12 at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church.
