Former Bainbridge Island resident Caroline Helen Smith, 81, died peacefully July 11 at her home in Poulsbo.
She was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Joplin, Mo., to William Jennings and Helen Bergstrom, immigrants from Sweden who settled in Fletcher Bay. She grew up on Bainbridge Island, attended the Pleasant Beach Grade School and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1943.
She worked for Pacific Northwest Telephone until retirement in 1975. She then moved to Bremerton and Poulsbo in 2002. She enjoyed being withher family,red roses, traveling to Reno, dancing and her poodle, Smokey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil P. Michels, and her sister, Florence Hoffman.
She is survived by daughters Carol (Walt) Ball and Susan (Bob) Jellicoe of Bainbridge Island, Nancy Michels of Brownsville and Peggy (Joe) Graham of Silverdale; son Patrick of Poulsbo; brother Kenneth Bergstrom of Shoreline; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. July 15 at Hillcrest Cemetery on Old Mill Road on Bainbridge Island. A gathering of friends and family will follow at 2 p.m. at her home in Poulsbo. Arrangements are by Kass & Cook Family Funeral Home.
