Gerald Richard “Jerry” Orr, of Kingston, died on Sept. 17 after suffering a heart attack on Sept. 4. He was 72.
He was born on Oct. 15, 1936 to Vivian (Watson) and William Orr in Cripple Creek, Colo. The family moved to Bainbridge Island, where Jerry attended school, played high school football and basketball, and played the saxophone in the school band. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1955. In 1958 he married Linda Larson, his wife of 30 years. They raised their children, Alan and Angela, on Bainbridge Island until 1969, and then moved to Kingston.
He was a banker for American Marine Bank for over 30 years, retiring as vice president. He partnered with his good friend Rick Bjornson to open Video For Less in the 1980s, and upon retirement from the bank worked for Bjornson as a bookkeeper at Kingston Thriftway.
Over the years Jerry enjoyed serving the community as a baseball coach, volunteer EMT, member of the Kingston Yacht Club and Rotary Club, and Fire Commissioner. In his younger years he enjoyed golf and fishing, and in recent years shooting his pistols. He loved his family and friends immensely, had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed helping others in need. He was proud of his grandchildren and was an active grandpa, despite health difficulties.
He was preceded in death by his father, William, and mother Vivian; brother William, Jr.; and sister Barbara Zinn.
He is survived by son Alan (Kim) Orr of Kingston; daughter Angela (Kenny) Crawford of Kingston; sister Doris Selfors of Gig Harbor; seven grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
His family is grateful to the kind people who stopped to help during his heart attack, and for the compassionate care he received at Harrison Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kingston Christian Church Benevolent fund, P.O. Box 31, Kingston, WA 98346.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 at Kingston Christian Church, 11255 NE East 2nd St., Kingston.
