Eric H. Winquist

Eric H. Winquist, age 98, died June 10 at Salem Hospital in Salem, Ore.
He was born March 26, 1907 in Ljusna, Sweden. He came to the United States in 1924 and received further education in Milwaukee, Wis., and Seattle.
He married Eleanor Holmboe, daughter of a pioneer Arrow Point family, in the late 1930s. On Arrow Point, the couple raised two sons, who graduated from Bainbridge High School.
He was a highly regarded ship designer at the Winslow shipyard during World War II. Later, he worked with his father and brother designing sawmill machinery and received several patents.
He was a talented portrait and landscape painter. His work was shown in several galleries in Seattle, and he also had a show at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts.
In 1978, he moved to Salem, Ore., where he and his son Victor founded the Bethel Heights Vineyard near Salem.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Margaret of Salem; his son, Victor, and granddaughter, Melinda of Scottsdale, Ariz. Preceding him in death were his first wife Eleanor and son, Rick.
