Mercer Island snaps Bainbridge Island’s 15-meet win streak

The defending state champion Islanders handed the Spartans their first defeat this week in girls swimming and diving since October 2010.
Mercer Island won 108-78 in the home waters of Mary Wayte Pool on Tuesday.
The Islander win broke a 15-meet win streak for the Spartans.
Bainbridge, the number two 3A team in the state the past two years, is now 4-1 on the season.
Mercer Island is a four-time state 3A title winner, and the Islanders prevailed this week after taking first and second places in the 200-yard individual medley, the 100-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard breaststroke. MI also took the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle, and took firsts in 1-meter diving, the 100-yard butterfly, the 100-yard backstroke, and the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.
Bainbridge Island won the 200-yard medley relay thanks to the efforts of Shayla Archer, Ani Duni, Anna Peirano and Sarah Grundman. The foursome finished in 1:51.72.
Geneva Levy also won the 200-yard freestyle for the Spartans with the top time of 1:58.47, and Kay Sterner claimed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:13.32.
