Grab your sweetheart and celebrate Valentine’s Day with a memorable evening at Bainbridge Performing Arts during the two-week run of “Love Letters,” opening Thursday, Feb. 4.
Prize-winning playwright A.R. Gurney gives a rich portrait of artist Melissa Gardner and politician Andrew Makepeace Ladd III as they take swings and misses through decades of love letters in this evocative, funny and bittersweet story. Spilling from page to stage, the show is a testament to the power of words — capturing the complexities of two hearts inextricably bound from childhood.
An innovative three-cast rotation may tempt audience members to see the show more than once. The two-person production will run for five evenings, performed by Marilyn Dearsley and George Shannon on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5, Barbara Deering and John Ellis on Feb. 13, and Victoria Brown and Jack Armstrong on Feb. 12 and Feb. 14.
Ann Wilkinson Ellis makes her BPA directorial debut with this production. She has appeared on stage in “Private Eyes,” “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “The Vagina Monologues” at BPA.
Most recently, she directed “Mere Mortals,” one of six plays by David Ives presented in Swinging Hammer Productions’ 2016 One Acts. She produced the award-winning independent film “Farewell to Harry,” the inspirational CD “Still With Thee,” and the BPA Gallery exhibit, “Grey Matters – All Things Elephant,” which featured her poetry in collaboration with her husband John Ellis’s drawings, mixed media and prints.
“Love Letters” appears at BPA Feb. 5 through Feb. 14, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays.
Tickets are $27 for adults, $22 for seniors and $19 for students, youth, military and teachers. They may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org, by phone at 206-842-8569 or in person at BPA.
