Bainbridge Island’s champion saxophone player will take the stage with the Bremerton Symphony Orchestra during the orchestra’s season finale concert this weekend.
Henry Brown, a Bainbridge High sophomore who recently won the state title as the top tenor in the Washington Music Educator’s 2016 competition, will join the three other winners of the symphony’s Young Artist Competition in the symphony’s final performance on Sunday, May 22.
The Bremerton Symphony Orchestra and Chorale will present “Alexander Nevsky & Disciples” at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 22 at the Bremerton Performing Arts Center.
Brown will present a most romantic work, the “Glazunov Concerto in Eb Major.”
Fellow competition winners Grace Winslow and Caleb Winslow will perform the “Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos,” billed as a brilliant work that unites the properties of Paris café songs with the sound wash of Javanese Gamelan music. Also, Young Artist awardee Adrian King will give a dazzling rendition of Prokofiev’s scintillating “Third Piano Concerto.”
Other guest artists on the program include members of Kitsap Community Chorale, under the direction of Lesley Niemi.
The “Alexander Nevsky Cantata” for chorus and orchestra is one of the largest and loudest pieces in the repertoire. The subject is the incursion of Swedish knights into Russian territory, the summoning of Prince Alexander Nevsky, and his subsequent victory over the crusaders in 1242. Audience members will see and hear great battle scenes with a cast of thousands. Composing genius Sergei Prokofiev wrote this score for genius movie director Sergei Eisenstein; many consider this the greatest film score ever written.
Tickets are $26 for adults, $22 for seniors and military, $15 for students 19 and older with valid ID, and $8 for youth 18 and under. Tickets may be purchased at 360-373-1722, online at bremertonsymphony.org or at the door. Intermission refreshments will be provided by CJ’s Evergreen Catering.
The entire season is made possible in part by support from Kitsap Bank.
