With the Primary Election in our collective rear-view mirror, it’s time to forget about politics and campaigns for the next three months, right?
Wrong.
In 13 weeks and four days, we will select the next president of the United States.
We’ve heard a lot from both candidates in the race. And for some folks, it may be too much already; some statements have strained the bounds of belief, let alone accuracy, appropriateness or decency.
Truth be told, it’s been difficult — and a bit scary — to hear some of the things that have been said by the presidential contenders this election cycle. And now, at a time when we could be sharing a deserved national pride powered by our golden representatives in Rio and contemplating the renewed spirit of opportunity that a presidential choice presents, we are awash with dark and dour predictions of America’s standing now and in the future.
But it’s not the time to turn away our attention; too much is at stake this November.
Beyond the presidential contest, we will also vote for U.S. senator, 6th District U.S. representative, governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer, state auditor, attorney general, commissioner of public lands, superintendent of public instruction, insurance commissioner, state senator, state representative, state Supreme Court justice, Kitsap County commissioner, and public utility district commissioner.
We will also decide whether to fund a passenger-only ferry service that will be paid for by an increased sales tax.
