Chiara D’Angelo, the teenage activist who climbed a Douglas fir on a wooded property near Highway 305 to protest a coming shopping development, has turned down a deal from the developer to come down from her 70-foot perch and avoid prosecution.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters gathered in the forest below after a 4 p.m. deadline passed Tuesday, D’Angelo said she had been offered a deal to come down from the tree to avoid charges.

D’Angelo indicated she had spoken to representatives from Visconsi, the Ohio-based company that is planning to put a retail shopping center on approximately 8 acres across from the McDonald’s on High School Road.

She said that if everyone except for five protesters left the property, and she came down from the tree, she would not face charges.

D’Angelo said she rejected the offer because she did not trust Visconsi and did not have the offer in writing.

She also asked the protesters to stay at the site.

D’Angelo was facing a 4 p.m. deadline Tuesday to leave her tree stand or be considered a trespasser and subject to removal.
