PORT GAMBLE – The Gear Grinders, Bainbridge Island’s high school-level and middle school-level competitive racing mountain bike team, entered 14 riders in their first statewide competition of the season Saturday, March 29 in Port Gamble and finished the day with three top finishers.

The race was held in blustery conditions at Port Gamble Trails and is part of a four race series by the Washington Student Cycling League.  The League operates mountain bike racing for girls and boys from grades six through 12.

The high school team placed two riders on the winners’ stand; both Anika Vroom and Tessa Vroom both finished second in their categories.

The middle school team entered 11 riders, seven in their first-ever mountain bike race, according to team officials.

Sebastian Belkin finished in second place in his category.

The team’s next race is at Peninsula 360 Park near Gig Harbor on Friday, April 17.
