Jane Callahan, daughter of Edward and Bernice Peters was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 30, 1930 and passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026 in Poulsbo, Washington.
Her mother, who was raised in Laconia, New Hampshire, was the niece of Walter S. Baldwin, founder of Laconia Savings Bank. As a young girl Jane attended school in Laconia and the family moved to Dover, New Hampshire where her father worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Jane graduated from Dover High School and later received her diploma from the University of New Hampshire. She also attended Keene State College. Jane lived in Illinois, Missouri and finally Bainbridge Island where she and her husband Bob raised the family.
Jane never forgot her roots and in 1985 started a group picnic on Bainbridge Island with a lobster bake and home cooked food to encourage displaced New Englanders to bond together in the spirit of New England.
She was a lifelong member of the First Church of Christ Scientist and was actively social over the years participating in many associations such as League of Women Voters, Republican Women’s Club, Ladies Musical Club, Bainbridge Island Historical Society, Friends of the Library and American Legion Auxiliary. She tutored young readers, became a travel agent and volunteered for many organizations. She cherished animals and started a pet-sitting business later in life which gave her immense happiness. She loved flowers and adored the sound of Luciano Pavarotti’s music.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband Bob, son Peter, and sister Shirley. She is survived by her children Joy (David), Jay, Jeff and Gail, niece Karen (Alan), brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Joyce, niece Dawn (David), nephew Jonathan and her beloved grandchildren Alex and Ari. She will be dearly missed.
The family will hold a private memorial in Laconia, New Hampshire. We are eternally grateful to the amazing staff at Martha and Mary who provided such compassionate comfort and care of Jane over the past years. Those who wish to make a donation in her memory are invited to consider Martha and Mary, Poulsbo, WA.
