People of all ages showed up at the annual event.

How often do you get to toss a duck, throw a Frisbee or participate in a three-legged race with a police officer?

Attendees at the National Night Out at Waterfront Park on Bainbridge Island Aug. 6 got to do those things and more, including a scavenger hunt where people asked officers questions that were often humorous for a chance to win prizes.

National Night Out is a nationwide effort to bridge the gap between police and community. It has become even more important since the division created by the anti-police movement a few years ago after the George Floyd tragedy.

Nice weather brought a huge crowd out to the event, said Shannon Hays, city communications director and the event’s coordinator.

Other activities included: Touch-a-Truck, free masks and mugs face painting, a giant inflatable slide, State Patrol robot demonstrations, BI Fire Department truck, Kids Discovery Museum activities, temporary tattoos, bubbles, music and more.

Community booths included: U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Bainbridge Prepares, Bainbridge Youth Services, Kitsap Regional Library, Helpline House, Dispute Resolution Center of Kitsap County and Housing Resources Bainbridge.

Food available for purchase included hot dogs with vegetarian and wheat-friendly options, shaved ice and cotton candy delights.
