How can we keep children safe in a world where technology is changing the way we act and interact with each other? Because “the first step is education,” the Bainbridge Island School District will host two presentations on Thursday, Feb. 11 by acclaimed Internet safety expert Katie LeClerc Greer.
Greer will meet with fifth- through 12th-grade students during the day and offer a session for families, educators and community members from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Woodward Middle School Commons.
With children using their electronic devices or some form of technology an average of 7½ hours each day, keeping up with the latest trends and dangers can seem like an impossible task. However, as a former intelligence analyst with the Massachusetts State Police and a former director of internet safety with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office, Greer has spent nearly a decade providing Internet/technology safety education to schools, law enforcement agencies, community organizations and at conferences in the United States and Canada.
During her discussion spanning topics from sexting to geo-tracking, Greer will help families understand new technology and gain strategies to keep kids safe.
