SEATTLE – The Bainbridge High varsity coed tennis team lost to Bishop Blanchet 6-5 in the first round of the Metro League playoffs last Thursday.
It was a scrappy match and too close to call throughout, according to team officials.
Bainbridge lost all three Boys Singles matches, but won all three Girls Singles matches. The Spartans also won both Boys Doubles matches, but lost the Girls Doubles events and the Mixed Doubles match as well.
The island squad was forced to dust themselves off and jump straight into the rest of the tournament.
“The team is no longer playing as a team since we are now out of the playoffs,” explained BHS team spokesman Steven Curtis. “Instead, we are moving into the Metro Tournament which begins this weekend. Each team sends 14 players, seven girls and seven boys, to compete.
“Each singles player or doubles team will complete against other teams,” Curtis added. “If they do well enough in Metro, they will move on to districts the following weekend. From there, players move on to state.”
BHS has a history at state.
“Last year, Keet Curtis and Ben Devries went to state as a doubles team,” Curtis said. “Ben will be competing again with a new partner, Eli Wagner. Our top girls player, Sami Jiang, is a returning sophomore and is expected to do well in the tournament.”
