Sylvia Smith passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at The Messenger House on Bainbridge Island.
She was born on Jan. 30, 1935 and was 79.
Sylvia graduated from South Kitsap High School and worked at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as an engineering technician.
She was a horsewoman. Her greatest passion was riding, breeding and caring for quarter horses. She and her husband, Howard, owned Smith’s Quarter Horses in Port Orchard for more than 45 years. Her favorite horse was a stallion named Zip It Up that they owned for almost 30 years.
Sylvia also loved to garden and do anything outdoors. In her later years she was often seen walking her dog, Ollie, on Mandus Olson Road. Her family remembers her as a wonderful mother and grandmother whose first concern was always for others.
She is survived by her daughter, Tracy Adams (Gerry) of Poulsbo; sister Janet Hamre of Kirkland; and her grandchildren; Mackenzie Adams of Lafayette, Indiana and Madison Adams of Seattle; and also niece Makenna Hamre and nephew Brett Hamre.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Howard Earl Smith and parents Alice Barth and John Hamilton.
Services will be private. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
